Amazon’s cloud service AWS introduced a new chat tool named Amazon Q. This tool allows businesses to ask questions that are tailored to their specific needs. The announcement was made during the Amazon Web Services’ Reinvent conference in Las Vegas. With this move, Amazon aims to compete with Microsoft and Google in the field of productivity software.
This comes a year after OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, launched ChatGPT Turbo, a chatbot that uses generative artificial intelligence to create human-like text in response to short human inputs.
Introducing Amazon Q, Features and Pricing
The chat tool, Q, gets its name from either the character Q in James Bond movies or the Q character in Star Trek, depending on which AWS executive you ask.
A preview of Q is currently accessible, and some of its features can be used for free. After the preview phase, there will be a business user tier priced at $20 per person per month. Additionally, a version with extra features designed for developers and IT workers will be available for $25 per person per month. For business workers using Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Duet AI for Google Workspace, the cost is $30 per person per month.
At first, Q will assist individuals in grasping the capabilities of AWS and troubleshooting problems. According to Adam Selipsky, CEO of AWS, people will be able to interact with Q in communication apps like Salesforce’s Slack and text-editing applications used by software developers. Q will also be integrated into AWS’ online Management Console and can provide document citations to support its chat responses.

Selipsky mentioned that the tool can automatically make changes to source code, reducing the workload for developers. The service is designed to connect with over 40 enterprise systems, allowing discussions on information stored in Microsoft 365, Dropbox, Salesforce, Zendesk, and AWS’ S3 data-storage service. Additionally, users can upload documents and ask questions while engaging with Q.
How Amazon Q Works with Amazon Bedrock
Amazon Q is compatible with any models available on Amazon Bedrock, which is AWS’s collection of AI models, encompassing Meta’s Llama 2 and Anthropic’s Claude 2. Users of Q typically make a choice among the models available, connect to the Bedrock API associated with the selected model, leverage it to understand their data, policies, and workflow, and subsequently implement Amazon Q.
AWS highlighted that Amazon Q underwent training using 17 years’ worth of AWS knowledge. It is designed to facilitate specific inquiries related to AWS use and can offer recommendations for the most suitable AWS services for a given project.
Changing the Game for AWS Users
According to Steven Dickens, Vice President and Practice Leader at the Futurum Group, a technology industry research firm, AWS Q is poised to revolutionize the experience for AWS customers dealing with a multitude of service options that often overlap.
He noted that AWS has chosen not to create a separate AI assistant for each service in its portfolio, and as a result, he anticipates widespread adoption of Q in the coming months among both developers and cloud administrators.

Over the years, Amazon has introduced various end-user applications, covering areas such as supply chain management, email, encrypted messaging, video calling, customer service, and marketing outreach. However, none of these has achieved significant success, and a substantial portion of AWS revenue is derived from its core computing and storage services.
AWS Vice President Deepak Singh mentioned that administrators will have the ability to decide whether Q can respond to inquiries on general topics.
Amazon recently expanded the language options in its Amazon Transcribe service. Now, it can transcribe spoken words in 100 different languages using advanced AI technology.
Conclusion
Amazon Q is a new chat tool from AWS designed for businesses. It aims to compete with Microsoft and Google in productivity software. Q has various features and pricing plans, making it accessible for different users. The tool integrates with AWS and is expected to change how users experience AWS.
