Apple’s Vision Pro is set to be released in the United States on February 2, as announced in a press release on Monday. Preorders will start on January 19 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time, according to the product page.
The Vision Pro will offer prescription lens inserts for $149, and it will come with 256 GB of storage. Additionally, Apple’s stock saw a 0.75% increase during premarket trading on Monday.
Priced at $3,500, Apple’s headset is designed to compete with Meta’s Quest headsets, Varjo and has been in development for several years. Apple unveiled the product during its Worldwide Developers Conference in 2023.
Apple’s Vision Pro Release, A New Era in Virtual Reality
In Monday’s announcement, Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned, “The era of spatial computing has arrived.” The headset is equipped with Apple’s M2 chip, the same chip used in its computers.
The Vision Pro marks Apple’s first venture into a new product category since the launch of the Apple Watch in 2015. Analysts and experts don’t foresee the headset generating substantial revenue in the beginning. For instance, UBS predicts Vision Pro revenue to be approximately $1.4 billion, which they consider a “relatively immaterial” amount.
Despite previous attempts by various companies to promote virtual reality, these efforts have yet to result in widespread adoption among consumers or businesses.
The Vision Pro introduces a fresh operating system called VisionOS, along with an input system that enables users to control the headset using their eyes, hands, and voice. Apple highlights compatibility with various productivity and creativity apps, such as Microsoft’s Office suite and Salesforce’s Slack.
Apple’s goal with the new headset is to transform the way users engage with gaming and video content. The headset allows users to watch videos from Apple TV+ and other platforms on a virtual reality screen that gives the sensation of being 100 feet wide, as mentioned in the company’s release.
Face Scanning for Realistic Avatars
Apple highlighted the Vision Pro’s ability to scan faces for a lifelike avatar, or “Persona,” visible in FaceTime calls. The headset boasts cutting-edge features, including a unique “custom micro‑OLED display system” with 23 million pixels.
