On Wednesday, Elon Musk introduced his highly anticipated artificial intelligence startup, xAI. He revealed a team comprising engineers from prominent U.S. technology companies, which he aims to rival in his endeavor to create an alternative to ChatGPT.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and the owner of Twitter, will be at the helm of the startup. He has repeatedly expressed his belief in the necessity of pausing AI development and advocating for regulatory measures within the industry.
“Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality,” Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday.
According to the website, xAI has scheduled a Twitter Spaces event for July 14.
Among the members of the xAI team are Igor Babuschkin, formerly an engineer at DeepMind, Tony Wu, who has experience working at Google, Christian Szegedy, a former research scientist at Google, and Greg Yang, who previously worked at Microsoft.
In March, Musk registered a company called X.AI Corp in Nevada, as documented in a state filing.
The company identifies Musk as the sole director, with Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk’s family office, serving as the secretary.
In April, the billionaire had announced his intention to introduce a truth-seeking AI called TruthGPT, aimed at competing with Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI, both designed to comprehend the intricacies of the universe.
Generative AI gained significant attention with the release of OpenAI’s renowned chatbot, ChatGPT, which debuted in November the previous year, preceding the launches of Bard and Bing AI.
Dan Hendrycks, currently the director of the Center for AI Safety and an expert in AI risk assessment, will provide guidance to the xAI team.
Although Musk’s new company is distinct from X Corp, the website states that it will collaborate closely with Twitter, Tesla, and other companies.
xAI has announced its plans to hire skilled engineers and researchers in the Bay Area.
