Elon Musk’s Boring Company has paused construction on a tunnel leading to the Las Vegas airport after a worker suffered a “crushing injury” late Wednesday night, Fortune reports. Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched an investigation into the incident.
According to the Clark County Fire Department, a call came in at 10:12 p.m. local time, prompting an 18-person rescue team to respond. While the exact circumstances remain unclear, officials said the worker was lifted from the site with the help of an on-site crane. The fire department confirmed the individual is “reported to be stable.”
The Boring Company has spent recent years building tunnels that link the Las Vegas Convention Center with a handful of nearby hotels and casinos. The system, which currently spans 3.5 miles, has carried more than 3 million passengers. The company’s long-term goal is to expand the network to cover most of Las Vegas, including direct connections to the airport.
However, safety concerns have loomed over the project. Dozens of workers have reportedly been injured during tunnel construction, and even the project’s former safety manager has raised public alarms about the risks at these worksites.
