Dr Steve Reid, Sport and Exercise Physician and newly appointed Chief Medical Officer for Paralympics Australia at the Paris 2024 games, aims to establish relationships with an offshore network of medical professionals who can provide medical care to Australian Para-athletes competing internationally. Dr Reid, who was the CMO for the Australian Paralympic Winter Team at the Beijing 2022 games, plans to create a network of medical professionals who can provide assistance to athletes who do not have a doctor present during their travels in the event of illness or injury.
Dr Reid also aims to complete a few projects that would leave the organization in a stronger position before he exits his role as CMO. With 18 months to go before the Paris Games, Dr Reid has sufficient time to understand the sports and many of the athletes while ticking off important projects. Additionally, he plans to ensure that the medical team is adequately prepared with all the resources, import-export paperwork, and screenings of athletes’ medical conditions, allergies, and medications.
Paralympics Australia has completed its Performance Support Team for the Paris 2024 games with the appointment of Dr Steve Reid as Chief Medical Officer. The headquarters medical team includes Dr Rachel Harris and Dr Viran de Silva, and they were selected based on their skills and experience, with a strong response from high-calibre applicants for the CMO role. Australian Paralympic Team Chef de Mission Kate McLoughlin expressed excitement over the talented team assembled and their ability to provide excellent care for athletes and staff.
Dr Reid has worked with both Harris and de Silva and is impressed by their skills and character. He plans to meet with colleagues from ParalympicsGB during the World Championships in August and visit Paris to assess medical facilities and services. Dr Reid previously worked as the Australian Paralympic Winter Team’s CMO at the Beijing 2022 games and is excited to continue his association with Paralympics Australia.
