Instagram has begun testing a repost feature that allows users to share posts from others directly to their Feed, the company confirmed. This development isn’t entirely unexpected, as the platform was previously spotted working on the feature back in 2022.
Some users have already reported seeing the feature appear in their accounts, with one noting that users can repost both their own content and posts from others.
Naturally, the potential official rollout may be met with mixed reactions. Critics may argue that it adds yet another content type to an already cluttered platform filled with Feed posts, Stories, Reels, Notes, DMs, ads, and more.
However, others might welcome the addition, as it provides a more seamless way to share and amplify content, similar to what users already do on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Threads.
Currently, users can share someone else’s post in a Story, but this new repost feature would allow direct sharing to the Feed. Many users already rely on third-party apps or manual workarounds to repost content—an official tool would eliminate the need for those extra steps.
For content creators, this functionality could help expand their visibility and reach. Additionally, Instagram is already filled with reposted memes and images, often lacking proper attribution. A formal repost option could help ensure original creators receive the credit they deserve.
Introducing reposts also aligns Instagram with other social media platforms that have embraced similar features, including TikTok and Threads. The concept itself was popularized in 2009 when Twitter introduced the “Retweet.”
As with all test features, there’s no guarantee if or when Instagram will roll out reposts to all users.
