Over a year after being offered for sale, Manchester United announced on Sunday that British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe has agreed to purchase a part of the famous Premier League team.
Ratcliffe, who owns the large company INEOS and is among the wealthiest individuals in Britain, will acquire a share of “up to 25%” in the club, investing $300 million in its Old Trafford stadium. As part of this arrangement, United stated that Ratcliffe would oversee the soccer operations of the club.
Ratcliffe’s Plans for Manchester United
Upon finalizing the agreement, Ratcliffe will contribute $200 million, with an additional $100 million to be provided by the conclusion of 2024, according to United’s announcement. The entire deal, which includes the $300 million funding, is estimated to be valued at approximately $1.6 billion. It is important to note that the approval of the Premier League is required for the completion of this deal.
Born in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, Ratcliffe initially sought to purchase the majority share of approximately 69% owned by the Glazers, the American proprietors of the club.
Expressing his satisfaction, Ratcliffe, a local and lifelong supporter of the club, stated, “I am very pleased that we have been able to agree a deal with the Manchester United Board that delegates us management responsibility of the football operations of the club.”

He added, “While the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times. We will bring the global knowledge, expertise, and talent from the wider INEOS Sport group to help drive further improvement at the club, while also providing funds intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford.”
Ratcliffe’s Investment and INEOS’s Impact at Manchester United
Trawlers Limited, a company entirely owned by Ratcliffe, will fund the transaction without relying on any debt, according to United. Fans of United have criticized the Glazers for their leveraged buyout, which burdened the club with debt, and have expressed concerns about perceived insufficient investment and the dividends taken by the owners.
In a statement, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer, United’s executive co-chairmen and directors, mentioned, “Sir Jim and INEOS bring a wealth of commercial experience as well as significant financial commitment into the club. And, through INEOS Sport, Manchester United will have access to seasoned high-performance professionals, experienced in creating and leading elite teams from both inside and outside the game.”
“Manchester United boasts talented individuals throughout the organization, and our goal is continuous improvement at every level to enhance the success our dedicated fans experience in the future.
In November of last year, the Glazers announced their intentions to seek new investment and enlisted the services of the US merchant bank Raine to oversee this process, which could potentially involve a complete sale.
Ratcliffe had been in competition with Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani to acquire the majority share from the Glazers, who also own the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, after extended negotiations, Sheikh Jassim withdrew his bid in October, leaving Ratcliffe in a position to secure a minority stake in the club.” Moreover, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan focuses on sports for economic transformation, into investments Like Soccer, Golf, and Formula 1 and including the purchase of Newcastle United and backing a competition.
United reported that Ratcliffe had bought each share at a cost of $33.
Conclusion
British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe is investing $300 million in Manchester United, acquiring up to 25%. Beating competition for a deal worth about $1.6 billion, he plans positive changes. The funding, from his company Trawlers Limited without debt, awaits Premier League approval. This significant investment offers hope for improvements amid concerns over the club’s management.
