OpenAI is rethinking its ambitions to turn ChatGPT into a full-fledged e-commerce platform, as early efforts to integrate direct purchasing features have fallen short of expectations.
In an announcement on Tuesday, the company revealed it is moving away from its “Instant Checkout” feature, which previously allowed users to buy products directly within the ChatGPT interface. The feature, introduced last year, was part of OpenAI’s broader push to position ChatGPT as a shopping assistant that could guide users from discovery to purchase without leaving the platform.
Instant Checkout, launched in September, enabled users to discuss products with the chatbot, add items to a cart, and complete purchases through integrated vendor systems. While transactions were ultimately processed by merchants, ChatGPT served as the intermediary platform.
However, OpenAI acknowledged that the feature did not meet expectations. “We’ve found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide,” the company said, adding that it will now allow merchants to rely on their own checkout systems while shifting focus toward improving product discovery.
A company spokesperson confirmed that development of Instant Checkout as a standalone feature will be deprioritized. Instead, OpenAI plans to enhance how users explore and compare products, while continuing to support multiple checkout pathways, including redirection to merchants’ websites.
Previous reports from CNBC and The Information indicated that OpenAI’s revised approach involves merchants building dedicated apps within ChatGPT, which would guide users to external checkout pages. According to sources, user behavior has shown limited interest in completing purchases directly through the chatbot, with e-commerce platforms seeing minimal revenue from ChatGPT-driven traffic.
Rather than acting as a transactional platform, ChatGPT is now being positioned as a centralized research tool for consumers. The company aims to help users make more informed buying decisions by offering detailed product insights, comparisons, and recommendations.
This evolving shopping experience is powered by OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open e-commerce standard developed in collaboration with Stripe. The protocol leverages merchant-provided data to enhance product discovery and comparison.
Going forward, ChatGPT will focus on delivering richer product information, including side-by-side images, pricing details, features, and user reviews—aiming to serve as a comprehensive guide rather than a direct sales channel.
