SpaceX is reportedly preparing a new secondary share sale that would value the company at around $800 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. If finalized, that figure would double SpaceX’s most recent $400 billion valuation and push it past OpenAI, making it the most valuable private company in the United States.
The massive number underscores just how common sky-high valuations have become in today’s private markets. OpenAI is currently valued at roughly $500 billion, while rival AI company Anthropic reportedly jumped to about $350 billion last month after major funding from Microsoft and Nvidia — nearly double what it was valued at only a few months earlier.
These soaring valuations highlight a broader trend: major tech companies can now reach public-market levels of worth without ever going public, thanks to large secondary sales that give early investors liquidity while letting companies avoid the pressure of quarterly earnings.
Founded in 2002, SpaceX has solidified itself as a dominant force in the commercial launch industry. The company also operates Starlink, its satellite-based internet service, which surpassed 8 million global users as of November.
