NFL Playoff Overtime Rules
The NFL’s playoff overtime rules were updated in 2010, with a key modification made in 2023 to ensure both teams get at least one possession before a winner is determined. The change followed controversy over the Chiefs’ AFC Divisional Playoff win against the Bills in January 2022, where Buffalo never got a chance to possess the ball.
Here’s a breakdown of the current rules:
- A coin flip decides which team receives the opening kickoff.
- Both teams get at least one possession before the game can be decided.
- If the score remains tied after both teams’ first possessions, the next score (touchdown, field goal, or safety) wins the game.
- 15-minute periods continue until a winner is declared.
- No coach challenges are allowed; all reviews are initiated by the replay official.
- Each team gets three timeouts per half (or every two overtime periods).
- If no winner is determined after four overtime periods, another coin toss occurs before play resumes.

Ronald Torbert, an NFL official since 2010, has been named the referee for Super Bowl LIX. This will be his second time officiating a Super Bowl; he previously served as the referee in Super Bowl LVI, when the Rams defeated the Bengals.
His officiating crew includes:

- Max Causey (Line Judge)

- Mearl Robinson (Field Judge)
