President Donald Trump purchased up to $50,000 worth of SpaceX shares on June 23, just two weeks after Elon Musk’s company completed its record-setting initial public offering, according to a financial disclosure first reported by Reuters.
The exact price Trump paid for the shares is not known. By June 23, however, SpaceX stock had already dropped from its peak above $200, with shares trading around the mid-$150 range. By the end of trading on Monday, the stock had fallen to its $135 IPO price, potentially leaving the president’s investment below its purchase value.
Trump and Musk have maintained a close relationship despite a brief dispute last summer. During that fallout, Musk accused Trump of withholding Department of Justice files related to Jeffrey Epstein because Trump’s name allegedly appeared frequently in the documents.
SpaceX has also continued to secure an increasing number of government contracts while benefiting from the Trump administration’s deregulatory policies, according to a recent analysis by The Wall Street Journal.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told Reuters that Trump’s stock portfolio is managed by third-party financial institutions and follows “recognized indexes, such as the Schwab 1000.”
That detail is particularly relevant because SpaceX pushed major stock indexes to change their rules to allow the company to be added more quickly ahead of its IPO. As a result, many investors may now hold SpaceX shares indirectly through index funds without realizing it.
The disclosure therefore provides a rare glimpse into the president’s personal exposure to Musk’s rapidly expanding space company, even as SpaceX continues to deepen its ties with the US government.
